Protecting Your Financial Information Online

February 11th  is National Internet Safety Day, a perfect time to focus on protecting your financial information online. As digital banking becomes more prevalent every day, it's crucial to safeguard your personal and financial data against cyber threats. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe online.

1. Use Unique, Strong Passwords

Your first fortress against cyber intruders begins with a strong password. Ensure your passwords are at least 12 characters long, including a blend of letters, numbers, and special characters. Avoid using easily guessable information like birthdays, your name, or common words. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your unique passwords.

2. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi-factor authentication adds an extra layer of security to your accounts. Even if someone manages to get your password, they won't be able to access your account without the second factor, typically a code sent to your phone via email or text message, or generated by an authentication app. Find more tips about Security Information.

3. Be Wary of Phishing Scams

Phishing scams are attempts to trick you into giving away your personal information. Be cautious of emails, messages, or websites that ask for sensitive information. Verify the sender's authenticity before clicking on links or downloading attachments. Legitimate institutions will never ask for your password or sensitive information via email. 4. Keep Software Updated

Stay ahead of potential vulnerabilities by ensuring your operating system, browser, and other software are consistently updated. These updates often include security patches that protect against newly discovered vulnerabilities. Set your devices to update automatically to ensure you’re always protected.

5. Monitor Account Activity

Regularly go over your bank statements and account activity for any unauthorized transactions. Early detection of suspicious activity can help prevent further fraud. Set up alerts to notify you of any significant changes or transactions within your accounts. Ex: creating a notification that will alert you when a transaction was made for over $300. 6. Use Secure Networks

Avoid conducting financial transactions over public Wi-Fi networks, since they are usually less secure. If you need to use public Wi-Fi, consider using a virtual private network (VPN) to encrypt your internet connection and shield your data from prying eyes.

7. Protect Your Devices

Install and regularly update antivirus and anti-malware software on all your devices. These can detect and remove malicious software designed to steal your personal information. Additionally, activate firewalls to provide an added layer of protection.

8. Educate Yourself and Others

Stay informed about the latest online threats and educate your family and friends about safe online practices. The more knowledgeable you are, the better you can protect yourself and your loved ones from cybercrime. You can learn about common scams here:

Other Tips

We asked Margarita Santiago, Bank of Bartlett VP/Retail Operations Manager and Integrated Technology for tips on how to stay protected online. This was her advice:

It feels like fraud is everywhere these days, and unfortunately, that's because it is. It's so important to take steps to protect yourself and your hard-earned money from all the schemes out there. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Pause and Verify

If someone you don't know is asking for money, gift cards, or transfers, stop and wait. Especially if they are rushing you to send it quickly.
  • Research and Consult

Always research before sending money. If you're unsure, ask a trusted friend, family member, or your banker for their opinion
  • Be Cautious with Links

Don't click on links or respond to emails, texts, or pop-ups without verifying them. This helps you avoid viruses and spyware.
  • Guard Your Devices

Don't let unknown companies access your phone or computer.
  • Avoid Untraceable Payments

Don't send cash through UPS, FedEx, or Bitcoin ATMs.

Millions of dollars are lost to fraud every year. Staying informed about scams is the best way to protect yourself.
